Description:

CARMEN is the first in a series of ten cubist paintings created by Arriero as a tribute to the master Pablo Picasso. Inspired by Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen,” this piece captures the essence and drama of the famous gypsy through a modern cubist interpretation.

At the center of the painting is a female figure, an original creation by Arriero. This central figure is surrounded by a recomposition of elements from several iconic Picasso works, including “Guitar on the Table,” “A Muse,” and “Femme au chien.”

The composition features the use of fragmented geometric shapes and vibrant colors, typical of the cubist style, forming a dynamic visual collage. The inclusion of the guitar and other objects from “Guitar on the Table” adds a musical touch, evoking Bizet’s opera.

The posture and expression of the central figure, inspired by “A Muse,” suggest a state of introspection and melancholy, while the presence of the dog from “Femme au chien” introduces an element of loyalty and companionship. These combined elements not only pay homage to Picasso’s technique and themes but also enrich the visual narrative of the painting, creating a connection between the classical tradition of cubist art and Arriero’s contemporary personal interpretation.

Artist’s Note:

Arriero has used oil on canvas to give depth and texture to the piece, allowing the colors and geometric shapes to interact vibrantly and harmoniously. This painting not only celebrates Picasso’s legacy but also invites the viewer to explore the intersection of music, art, and human emotion.
